If you want to purchase a watch that is going to impress people then it will need to be from one of the big brand names. There is a lot to choose from and some of the items in these collections will cost thousands of pounds. Each of the big brand names has an interesting history and a loyal following. Here are just a few of the most popular chronograph makers that you can choose from.

Rolex was once a British manufacturer of watches, but it has now been taken over by the Swiss. The company was originally called Wilsdorf and Davis when it opened for business in 1905. From the very beginning these watches relied on Swiss ingenuity for their mechanisms. In 1908 the name of the firm was changed to Rolex, and there is a bit of a mystery surrounding the inspiration for the name- some claim that it is just a made up word. In 1919 the business moved to Zurich in Switzerland. They have since gone on to become the most successful manufacturer of luxury watches on the planet – producing about two thousand of these beautiful items every day. The Rolex Submariner is my personal favourite from the collection, and this is also the watch made famous by 007 James Bond.

TAG Heuer

This Swiss manufacturer of luxury watches focuses on chronographs with a sporty feel to them. This watch maker has been in business since the 1860s and their products have become associated with some of the top sporting events around the globe – in particular motor racing. The main selling point of the Tag Heuer watch is their precision, but they also go to heroic efforts to produce watches that will suit active people. This company also had the proud honour of producing the very first watch to make it into space.

Breitling is based in the Swiss town of Grenchen and has been in business since 1884. This watch manufacturer is most associated with the glamorous world of aviation. Many of their watches are built specifically with pilots in mind. This brand of luxury watch is also appealing to anyone who has a bit of money, and just wants to own something with a lot of class. My favourite from this collection has to be the Breitling Navitimer.

Cartier SA

Cartier is one of the few top watchmakers that is not based in Switzerland. This is a French firm and as you can imagine the focus is on style and sophistication. Cartier was formed in 1847 and since then has created watches favoured by some of the most important people in the world; including celebrities and royalty. The Cartier Tank is probably the most loved of all their watches. This watch was first produced in 1917, and it was based on the actual design of a tank.

International Watch Company

The International Watch Company has been in business since 1868. Its founder was an American who moved to Switzerland because he realised that this was where all the right ingredients for designing luxury watches were to be found. This manufacturer has managed to be so successful because not only do they produce watches that are beautiful and sophisticated, but they also work hard to benefit from technological advancements. This dedication to always be improving things has ensured that they continue to be one of the most respected manufactures of chronographs on the planet.

So there you have just a few of the most famous watch makers on the planet. Hopefully you will be able to afford one of their products so that you can find out what all the fuss is about.
