There have been some amazing watches created over the centuries. This is an adornment with a very practical function and this is why it tends to have such a special place in our hearts. The ability to tell time is one of the ways that we differ from other creatures; it sets us apart. When the chronograph first became available to the masses it revolutionized the world. Our lives are controlled by time, and watches have made this possible. Here are just some of the best watches ever made.
The Cartier Tank
The Cartier Tank was created back in 1917. It was actually inspired by the Renault tanks that took part in World War 1. The watch is both square and rectangular. This is probably the watch that made the Cartier brand so famous. It remains as popular today as it was almost a century ago. Different versions of the watch have been created and some of them have diamonds and other lavish embellishments.
The Rolex Submariner is arguably the most desired watch of all time. It first appeared on the market back in 1953 and quickly gained legendary status in the world of chronographs. The watch was actually designed for divers but won far wider appeal. One of the big reasons for its fame is the fact that it was worn by 007 James Bond in 11 of these movies. This watch is waterproof to 300 meters. It is usually made with a case of solid gold and benefits from the perpetual rotor which means it is self winding.
The Casio Databank feels a bit dated now but when it was released back in 1984 it really did seem like something off a spaceship. This watch came with a calculator that turned out to be a bit impractical as the buttons were far too small. Despite its practical drawbacks the watch briefly became the thing to be seen wearing if you wanted to impress. The original Casio Databank wouldn’t win any awards today, but the modern versions come with a TV.
Omega Speedmaster Professional
The Omega Speedmaster Professional was so technically impressive when it was released that it was chose by NASA. The watch first became available back in 1957 and during the sixties this was what you would see on the wrists of American astronauts. Surprisingly it was never created with astronauts in mind but instead it was aimed at athletes. The original had a hand winding mechanism and it is still being made right up today. There have also been many special editions of the watch created. The Omega Speedmaster Professional has the great honor of being the first watch to make it all the way to the moon.
Tag Heuer Monaco
The Tag Heuer Monaco was created back in 1969 and it has become another classic watch that people lust after. It is associated with the world of car racing and it was probably made most famous by the fact that it was worn by Steve McQueen in the hit 1971 film Le Mans. This was the first automatic watch. The company stopped making this chronograph back in mid 70s, but demand remained so high that they released it again back in 2003.
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona
This is another Rolex watch that managed to set the world on fire when it was released back in 1961. One of the attractions was that it offered all the glamour of the Rolex name but cost slightly less than the Submariner. Only small quantities of the watch were released during the 60s and it has continued to be released in drips and drabs since then.
So there you have just six of the best watches ever made. Of course it is all subjective and there will be people who will argue with these choices. It has to be agreed though, that all of the watches mentioned here are classics that most of us would just love to own at least one of them.
